macOS Sierra 10.12.2 public beta 1 has just been made available to members of the Beta Software Program. If you have already installed the macOS Sierra public beta, simply go to Mac App Store > Updates and download it. How to make a backup of your Mac
Before joining the public beta, you are prompted to to make a backup of your Mac in case you may want to revert to OS X El Capitan.
Step 1: Choose the Time Machine icon from your Mac Menubar.
Step 2: Click on Backup now.
Wait until the backup is done, and then jump to the next section.
How to register your account for the macOS Sierra public beta
If you have installed a public beta for OS X, skip this step. You just need to log in with the same Apple ID. If you have never installed a public beta before, you are asked to register for macOS Sierra by logging in with your Apple ID.
Step 1: Open Safari on your Mac and navigate to beta.apple.com.
Step 2: Select Sign up to start.
Note that if you’ve already signed up for a previous public beta, select Sign in and jump to the How to enroll your Mac section below.
Step 3: Type in your Apple ID email address and password.
Step 4: Select Sign in.
After you’ve successfully signed up and signed in, you can now start downloading.
How to enroll your Mac in the macOS Sierra public beta
You can download the macOS Sierra public beta through the Mac App Store, but you will be required to provide a special code. The code is given to you on the website. Besides, when you begin the process, the code will be automatically entered for you.
Step 1: Navigate to beta.apple.com.
Step 2: Select the macOS tab, if it’s not highlighted already.
Step 3: Copy and paste your redeem code somewhere safe.
Step 4: Select Download the macOS Sierra Public Beta.
Step 5: The Mac App Store should open, sign in if prompted.
Step 6: Your macOS Sierra download will start automatically.
If it doesn’t happen:
Step 1: Launch the Mac App Store.
Step 2: Select the Featured tab.
Step 3: Select Redeem in the right sidebar.
Step 4: Enter your macOS Sierra code.
It’s good to be aware that the download may take time, as the file size of the macOS Sierra public beta is 4.86 GB. If you want to keep track of the download progress, simply open Launchpad from the Dock and then find the greyed-out Sierra circle. You can also pause and un-pause the download by clicking on the icon.
How to install the macOS Sierra public beta
Step 1: Open the Install macOS Sierra Public Beta app via Spotlight or Launchpad, if it’s not opened already.
Step 2: Select Continue at the bottom.
Step 3: If required to make a backup, and you didn’t before. Choose Continue in the dropdown.
If you did already, choose Cancel.
Step 4: After your backup is completed, select Continue at the bottom.
Step 5: Agree to the licensing terms.
Step 6: Select Agree again to confirm.
Step 7: Select the drive you wish to install onto.
Step 8: Select Install.
Step 9: Enter your administrator password > OK.
Step 10: Select Restart.
Once your Mac restarts, it will be running macOS Sierra.
