It can be seen that these days, more and more people have been using Facebook in order to buy and sell items each month, mainly through its groups feature. Over 450 million users visit the groups each month, according to Facebook.
With a view to helping people take full advantage of this activity, Facebook has just released Marketplace this week in the US, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Marketplace serves as a convenient place for people to discover, buy and sell items with each other in their community. This has shown Facebook’s attempt to delve deeper into e-commerce.
With the help of Marketplace, people will now find it easy to look for new things they are fond of. Facebook also claims that they will constantly develop new options and features to bring people the best experience. The company will not facilitate payment or delivery of items within Marketplace.
To head to Marketplace, you simply tap on the shop icon at the bottom of the Facebook’s mobile app. This will bring up an algorithmically generated home page where you can find an item based on location, category and price. Once you have found something you like, just tap on the photo to see more details from the seller along with a product description, and their general location before messaging the seller of the item, and you will make an offer. On the other hand, to sell an item, just follow these simple steps:
- Upload a photo from your camera roll
- Set a product name, description, and price
- Confirm your location and pick a category.
- Lastly, you simply post it.
From now on, everyone in your area can search for your item and send a message to you if they wish to but it. You can post to both Marketplace and a specific buy and sell group.
You can get information about your current and past transactions in Marketplace by heading to the Your Items section. Once there, you can view your items you’ve just saved, products you’ve posted for sale, and your message with people.
Concerning privacy and safety, Facebook prohibits the sale of firearms, animals, and alcohol, among other things. Besides, all sales are made offline by the users themselves.
Currently, the service is only available on the Facebook app for iPhone and Android. And Facebook is on the way to expand the service to other countries and at the same time make it available on desktop version in the coming months. Facebook does hope that Marketplace will make it easier for people to buy and sell items, and at the same time contribute to building trust among people in the whole community.
