Steps to disable the Reading Pane in Outlook on Windows

Step 1: First, fire up Outlook on your Windows PC.

Step 2: Once you are in, choose the View tab.

Step 3: Next, click the Reading Pane button, and choose Off from the drop-down menu. This menu also lets you move the reading pane to the bottom of the Outlook window.

Step 4: The reading pane should close. From now on, if you want to read an email, just double-click on it in the list and the email should open in a separate window.

If you have changed your mind and want to re-enable the reading pane, just choose Right or Bottom from the Reading Pane menu on the View tab.

Steps to disable the Reading Pane in Outlook for Mac

Step 1: First off, you are supposed to fire up Outlook on your Mac.

Step 2: Once you are in, choose the Organize tab.

Step 3: Next, click the Reading Pane button, and choose Off from the drop-down menu. This menu also lets you move the reading pane to the bottom of the Outlook window.

Step 4: The reading pane should close. Whenever you want to read an email, just double-click on it in the list and the email should open in a separate window.

In case you wish to re-enable the reading pane, just choose Right or Bottom from the Reading Pane menu on the Organize tab.
